Study rates Singapore fastest moving city in the world (02May'07)

The British Council conducted a study of the walking speed of pedestrians. And Singaporeans are the world's fastest walkers!

Singaporeans clocked the shortest time of 10.55 seconds.

Followed by Copenhagen (10.82 secs) and Madrid (10.89 secs).

European cities dominated the top 20 rankings, which included 3 Asian cities with Guangzhou coming in 4th while Tokyo ranked 19th.

New York is no.8 and surprisingly, London ranked outside the top 10.

The slowest in the study was a city in Malawi - at 31.60 seconds.

The British Council carried out the research in 32 cities, timing the walking speed of 35 men and women at each of the city centres.

In Singapore, the experiment was conducted on Orchard Road.

It calculated the average time taken for people to walk a distance of over 18 metres. The researchers only monitored adults who were on their own and ignored anyone conversing on mobile phones or struggling with shopping bags.

The British Council said people's walking speed is a reliable measure of the pace of life in a city.

On average, people are walking about 10 per cent faster now, compared to the early 1990s when it last conducted a similar study. But for Singapore, the pace of life has jumped 30 per cent. - CNA
